There are some topics I don't talk about. Politics, religion, and code editors.
To put it politely, engineers can be unusually passionate about the tools we use. If you want to provoke my colleagues into a fist fight, all you have to do is say "Visual Studio sucks!" followed by a quick "Vim is sooo much better!".
When I help someone learn to code for the first time, I am placed in the special position of recommending a code editor. At the moment, I recommend Visual Studio Code, because it is free and it is easy to set up. I tell the student that this is the same tool the pros use every day.
The student always seems to smile a little when I say that. I am a pro now!
