The myth of the 10x engineer programming since they were in nappies is not helpful.
There is an urgent shortage of software engineers, and globally we cannot produce enough of them to meet demand. We need to encourage the best minds to join us. If we start limiting the pool to only people who were programming at 2 years of age, we will never have enough engineers to solve the big problems.
When we idolise programmers who have been programming from 2, what do we project as an industry?
You’ll never catch up and you’ll never be a “10x” engineer.
Programming is only for people who come from wealthy families.
Programming is an elite club, and you’re not welcome.
Do you know what I was doing at 2?
I walked into my parents’ bedroom, and I pooped on the floor! Mum tells me it was quite hard to get the stain out of the carpet.
Your ability and career is not set in stone at 2 years of age. It’s not set in stone at 18, nor 30, nor any other age.
The software industry is in desperate need of your brain and your time. We need more people like you, no matter what you were doing at 2 years of age.
Come and join us.
