I love public speaking

I love public speaking.

I used to be a terribly shy person, but now I feel more uncomfortable off the stage.

Public speaking is a learnable skill. Sure, there are some extraordinarily talented orators. Thankfully, you don't need to be as good as Martin Luther King to run an effective sprint planning meeting.

Every engineer can improve their public speaking ability. And if you do, you'll run circles around your peers.

I'll let you in on a secret. You know that last conference you went to, the one with the amazing keynote speaker? That engineer wasn't born to be a great keynote speaker. They have simply done the reps.

I have been performing comedy for 12 years. One could argue that I am as unfunny as ever. Nevertheless, every show has improved my public speaking skill. Even a shy engineer like me can improve with deliberate practice.

That meetup talk you've been thinking about? Sign up for it now.
That standup comedy class you're keen on? Pay for it now.
That conference you want to speak at? Write your proposal now.

Do. It. Now.
