Don't be funny

. 1 min read

Despite my comedy background, I don't tell many jokes in conference talks.

There is a strong temptation to insert jokes into technical talks. I would suggest you reconsider the cringey pun or meme, because it can distract from the important technical point you want to communicate. Jokes should enhance your message, not steamroller it.

In my conference talks, I don't try to squeeze in as many jokes as I can. I don't even aim to tell the most jokes at a comedy show. Being funny is not proportional to the number of jokes you say.

Instead, being funny is knowing what to say at just the right moment, and no more than that.
