Be rubbish

. 1 min read

When was the last time you tried something you were absolutely rubbish at?

I try to be rubbish every day. Of course, I am not deliberately terrible in my job nor an end of semester exam.

Be rubbish where it is mostly harmless, but important enough that it stings just a little bit to comprehensively suck. I used to go to ballet classes and I was easily the worst in the school. Everyone else seemed to learn the moves quickly, I couldn't get it. Thankfully, my software engineering career will not be limited by my lack of physical coordination.

It is important to remember the feeling of being rubbish, because that's the feeling of learning. It is amazing how quickly we forget that every endeavour is hardest at the beginning.

Someday, you will want to learn something new. It is going to feel like you comprehensively suck at this new skill. That is fine, because you are good at being rubbish.
